Like you, there have been many times and instances in my life when things fall into place and dreams become realities. They can be simple things or they can be big-time goals. They go by different namesĀ - luck, providence, divine intervention, fate, destiny, positive thinking, and the like. No matter what you may want to call them, they always give you the feeling that you are blessed. You almost want to shout from the top of the roof and say, “Thank you!”
In November 2007, I had to look for a new apartment here in Hanoi. Hanoi is known for its lakes and so I got excited about the idea of having a house that has a lakeview. Michelle and I looked at many different houses. A lot of them were nice but as always, quality has its price. Knowing that renting a house is not often a good investment, we told ourselves, “If we rent an OK and cheap house, then we can save some money.” The optimistic side of me argued that maybe, just maybe, we can find a house that is nice and also affordable.
December came and because it was almost year-end, I was doing my year-end evaluation of my personal goals. I was getting pictures from the internet of things I want to achieve in my life. And then I thought, “Why not get a picture of a view of Hanoi lake?” And so I got this from the Internet:
Michelle and I kept searching for the house that stood out among the rest. As the good book says, “Seek and ye shall find.” By God’s grace, we found a place that’s nice, has a lakeview, and best of all, affordable. Here’s a picture of the view we have from our second floor balcony:
That’s not all. My colleague who left for Australia last month sold his satellite tv dish to me. I had it installed this week in my new place. Guess what?! I get local Filipino channels and other international cable channels 24/7. I love it! But I can’t help but wonder why on earth I can get this kind of quality tv reception here in Vietnam, while in the Philippines many rural areas are lucky to have two channels. Could it be because two of the biggest cable TV operators are owned by the same company? I hope the great tycoon Gokongwei will also get in to the tv broadcast industry and cable services to make sure that there is enough competition with large companies that have cartel-tendencies. Mr Gokongwei deserves a lot of praise for entering the cellular phone market (Sun Cellular) and the airline industry (Cebu Pacific) and making sure that there is fair competition. Anyway, back to the good news:
After a nice Christmas holiday in the Philippines where I was able to spend quality time with my loved ones, I’m now back here in Hanoi in our new house. This whole experience of achieving my goal of finding a new house and moving into it this week, got me thinking - If it’s possible for me to have this nice and affordable (a unique and rare combination) house here in Hanoi, can I extend my wish and ask our Lord to find my place in my true home, the Philippines?
I have it all planned out in my head and I can see how it will all happen in the near future. I long for the day when I can come back to the place where I belong and say, “I’m here for good.” I will embrace that day with arms wide open. And as I wait for that day to come, I keep the vigil and I continue to ask for blessings, to seek the right path, and to knock on the door of our Motherland. In my mind and in my heart, I’m already there. I am home.

feels so nice to know you’re finally home no? not a lot of our fellow filipinos have that ‘luxury’, sadly. anyway, welcome home, and bon voyage (i know it’s so late already), but still!

Thanks ha
Sarap nga talaga umuwi. Tapos eto pa, may flights na ang Cebu Pacific na Manila-Hanoi and Manila-Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). Galing talaga ng Cebu Pacific! Makes me wonder, ano na nangyari sa “flagship carrier” natin?
and oh yeah, not a lot of people are exactly that thrilled about John Gokongwei’s entrepreneurship, but i admire him nonetheless. have you read his speech during a university’s graduation? i posted it here some time ago: http://nonstandardized.com/alteregos/?p=330

Hi ris, thanks for sharing the link to John Gokongwei’s speech. Truly inpisiring! I hope someday our government can set-up a high-profile recognition and awarding system to honor people like him. Something like the UK Honours System where extraordinary citizens become knights. Then we can call him, “Sir John Gokongwei.”
hi! you have a very inspiring site. happened to see your comment in noemi dado’s blog. i regularly visit her site. for sure i’ll be a frequent reader of yours, too.
i agree with you about mr. john gokongwei. maybe it’s serendipity, i just read his opening remarks at the last Ad Congress, forwarded to me by a friend.
truly inspiring! i admire his whole family. iba talaga ang pagkapalaki nila sa mga anak nila compared to other children of some taipans. all the gokongwei children are worth emulating.
mr. john wants every filipino to be able to fly so he offers super low prices at cebu pacific. he made cell phone calls affordable to the masses thru suncellular’s 24/7 calls.
you’re right, the government should honor people like him. he encourages entrepreneurship, not just settle being employed.
thanks for your time reading this. i’ll be back soon.
you have a very nice view there in hanoi. regards to your wifey. =)
Hi babing! Thank you so much for your kind words. I always find it amazing how people can connect and make friends through the Internet. I’ll visit your weblog next week. For some reason, I can’t connect to blogspot and wordpress here at home. Which weblog do you prefer?
Keep in touch
Hello Mahal. I love our Hanoi home too.
I’ve never been a big fan of ‘views’ but I’d have to say it really makes a big difference especially after a hard day’s work.
It’s been a while since we last lived in Manila. Sometimes little things, like the sound of lapping waves or how the local kids play pinoy-like games outside the house (you know how you always tease me about my ‘probinsya’ hometown :P), these trigger memories of the time I used to spend with my family or in the beach. I’ve always been good at resisting the usual feeling of lungkot for being far away from everyone I love, but lately these blessings that we’ve been receiving is making me pause and reflect - what were my reasons for leaving our country? After all these wonderful experiences while living overseas, do I still feel the need to explore, to be far away from home? You’ve always been the homesick one…but lately, I’ve been thinking…

Hi Love! I long for the day when we can come back to our home country and say, “We’re back for good!” In the meantime, we’ll be making the most of our stay and our work here in our second home, Hanoi. I believe that the good Lord will lead us back to the Philippines at the right time.
I was really surprised when I found out through Google Earth that our balcony view here in Hanoi is directly facing the Philippines. In a way, every time we look outside our window, with a bit of imagination, we are actually looking at our real home
Mahal na mahal mo talaga ang ating Inang Bayan
Nice to hear that you and Michelle found a very nice and cheap place. The view is very pleasant too. Wow!
Since you can watch local channels sa Pinas, then I hope you were able to watch the 2-hour (crap) speech of JDV wherein he shouted “I am a sinner, we are all sinners!!!” Hehehe! Kakatawa, wala lang…

Hi Marc, musta parekoy? I missed Speaker JDV’s speech. I hope he was sincere. If there’s one thing we can admire about him is that he has staying power and if there’s one person in the government who is aware of the alleged Machiavellian politics going on, it would be him. Now that he has declared an all-out war with the present administration, maybe he will reveal a few insider secrets. I’m sure he is getting so many (death?)threats. I hope he is protected by the divine forces so that he may live to tell his tale.
May truth and justice prevail!
