Filipina moms love to remind their children to switch-off unncessary lights and electrical appliances. Who can blame them? No one wants to pay expensive Meralco bills. Well, our moms have found new allies among scientists who study climate change. And their message of energy conservation is now being broadcast on a global scale - thanks to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and other organizers of Earth Hour 2008.

Earth Hour 2008
I received a Facebook group invitiation from Gitz and an email from Roje asking me to sign-up for Earth Hour 2008. I did some research about it and I was amazed at Earth Hour’s simple but powerful goal - To go lights-out from 8pm-9pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008.
If you join this global movement, you will achieve three goals:
- You will be part of a worthy cause - Although people are still arguing if carbon emissions really contribute to climate change, scientists are in agreement that carbon emissions cause air pollution. So if you join this project, it’s possible that it won’t have an impact on climate change, but it will surely have a positive effect on air pollution.
- You will help raise awareness for environmentalism - We only have one planet and we have to be concerned about what happens to this planet we call home. By joining this movement and switching off your lights for an hour, you will be a good role-model to your friends and especially to children, the ones who will inherit Earth.
- The success of Earth Hour 2008 will spur more global movements and calls for action - As they say, success breeds more success. After this project, there will be more online movements that will call for simple but effective actions. Register now and be part of the online network that will empower ordinary citizens, like you and me, to become modern-day environmentalists.
Show your respect to your Mother. Do your part, join and celebrate Earth Hour 2008 and switch off the lights for an hour. And in the darkness, I hope and pray that we may realize that, in our own little way, we can be heroes for Mother Earth.
What Others are Saying
Sierra Club of Canada listed ten myths about global climate change. Now I know why Al Gore and the UN panel on climate change were the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
Lightpollution.org.uk talked about why wasted light means wasted energy.
Ms Noemi of aboutmyrecovery.com posted a video on global warming. She said she plans to have a candle-lit home from 8pm-9pm on March 29th.
Maki Eduardo of noneed4ink.com is excited to celebrate graduation night on the same date as Earth Hour.
jayr_patron of nowpublic.com reported that Metro Manila leads the Philippines in joining Earth Hour. I hope Metro Cebu and other Philippine cities and provinces follow suit.
Ryx of ericnabos.com gave out contact numbers for companies, organizations, and individuals who want to know more about being an earth saver. You can call (63-2) 9207931, (63-2) 9207923, or (63-2) 9207926.
Rick of projectmanila.com wrote about the humble beginnings of Earth Hour in Sydney last year. The energy saved last year was equivalent to 48,616 cars off the road for a year. That was only for one city. (At least 24 cities have signed up for Earth Hour 2008 and it’s interesting to find out how much impact this project would make this year.)
