Quote of the Day: William Shakespeare

The great English poet and playwright William Shakespeare was born today 444 years ago.  Yes, 444 years ago! Talk about living forever. To this day, children and adults from all over the world still enjoy reading his work.  And we will always remember the life lessons he has taught us in his historical plays (Henry IV, V, VI and Richard III), comedies (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It) and tragedies (Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and Othello). Today’s quote is from his play, “Henry IV Part III”  (Act II, Scene II)

The smallest worm will turn being trodden on,
And doves will peck in safeguard of their brood.

Life is Fun: World Book and Copyright Day

world_book_and_copyight_day.jpg

April 23rd is World Book and Copyright Day, according to the United Nations. Let’s celebrate it by reading more books, especially local ones. We should also encourage more people to become writers. Here’s a little story about a writer who died and was given the option of going to heaven or hell:

The writer wanted to check out hell and heaven first. As she descended into the fiery pits, she saw row upon row of writers chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they were repeatedly whipped with thorny lashes.

“Oh my,” said the writer. “Let me see heaven now.”

A few moments later, as she ascended into heaven, she saw rows of writers, chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they, too, were whipped with thorny lashes.

“Wait a minute,” cried the writer. “This is just as bad as hell!”

“Oh no, it’s not,” replied an unseen voice. “Here, your work gets published.”

Newsmaker: Ex-bishop Lugo is new Paraguayan President

(Also posted in www.filipinovoices.com)

After six decades of single-party ruling, Paraguayans have opened themselves to political change as they elected the independent presidential candidate, Fernando Lugo. Lugo used to be a Roman Catholic bishop but he had to let go of his religious vows when he decided to run for office. During his campaign, he promised a government for the poor and he ran on a platform of change which includes fighting corruption, instituting long-overdue agrarian reform, and investing in education. His 5-year term starts on August 15 and we can only hope that he can walk the walk.

Now, if we can only get our presidentiables to start preaching the gospel according to Lugo, then people might start listening to them.
