Newsmaker: Fitna, A Movie Against Islam and the Qur’an

Fitna is a disturbing Dutch documentary that openly speaks against the Islamicization of the world and the violence allegedly promoted by the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam. The movie shows videos and news clippings of acts of terrorism and extremism that have tainted the image of the world’s largest religion. At least 26 Islamic countries and various international organizations have condemned the movie for its negative portrayal of the Muslim faith. Even UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the film, saying “there is no justification for hate speech and incitement to violence.”

The Philippine government has also denounced Fitna citing its defamatory views against Islam as offensive. The government also took the opportunity to remind Filipinos (especially bloggers? and the media?) that freedom of expression “should always be done with the attendant responsibility.”

If you want to see the 16-minute movie for yourself, just google it.

Quote of the Day: Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill

Our quote today comes from one of the greatest Englishman who ever lived - Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. We all know him as the first leader to oppose Adolf Hitler. During the early stages of Nazism, many leaders  including Pope Pius XII, did not speak against Hitler’s oppression of the Jews. But not Churchill - He was a  lone voice in the fight for a free world and luckily for us, America, France and other countries joined him to defeat tyranny. On April 24, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II conferred on Churchill the most noble Order of the Garter, the highest order of knighthood in the UK Honours System. That same year, Churchill received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Yup, that’s correct - Nobel Prize IN LITERATURE. He wrote biographies, memoirs, thick volumes of history books and a novel. Whodda thunk it?

The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is. - Sir Winston Churchill

Life is Fun: The Driving Pope

Today is also the third anniversary of the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI. Here’s a little story about the Pope who travelled to the United States last week for a six-day pastoral visit:

The Pope arrived in Washington and was met by the limousine driver. The limo driver loaded the Pope’s luggage into the trunk and opened the passenger door for the Pope. But the Pope just didn’t want to go inside the vehicle.

“Excuse me, Your Eminence,” said the driver, “Would you please go inside the vehicle so that I can take you to your hotel?”

“Well, to tell you the truth,” the Pope replied, “they never let me drive at the Vatican, and I’d really like to drive today.”

“I’m sorry but I cannot let you do that. I’d lose my job! And what if something should happen?” protested the driver.

“There might be something extra in it for you,” said the Pope. “If you do this for me, you’ll spend less time in Purgatory.”

The driver believed the Pope’s promise and so he got in the back seat and the Pope got in the driver’s seat.

The driver quickly regretted his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pope sped away, accelerating the limo to 105 mph.

“Please slow down, Your Holiness!!!” pleaded the worried driver, but the Pope kept the pedal to the metal until they heard police sirens.

“Oh, my God, I’m gonna lose my license,” moaned the driver.

The Pope pulled over and rolled down the window as the cop approached. The cop took one look at him, went back to his motorcycle, and got on the radio. “I need to talk to the Chief,” he said to the dispatcher.

The Chief got on the radio and the cop told him that he stopped a limo for speeding.

“So bust him,” said the Chief.

“I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really important,” said the cop.

The Chief exclaimed, “All the more reason!”

“No, I mean really important,” said the cop.

The Chief then asked, “Who ya got there, the Mayor?”

“Higher.”

“Governor?”

“Bigger.”

“Well,” said the Chief, “Who is it?”

The cop relied, “I think it’s God!”

“What makes you think it’s God?” the Chief asked.

The cop said, “He’s got the Pope for a limo driver!”
