Newsmaker: Philippine Organic Coffee

“Yes, I’ll have Philippine organic, please.”

Sometime in the (near) future, this will be heard from the mouths of coffee lovers around the world. And I know that this may come as a surprise to those who love their imported coffee. But efforts are being made to revitalize the Philippine coffee industry: Figaro Foundation has been working with farmers in Cordillera in growing organic coffee; Nestle Philippines has also been working with Mayor Alfonso Gamboa in Negros Occidental to train ex-rebels in growing coffee and jatropha; the Negros Island Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Foundation recently launched the Negros Island Rainforest Coffee; and then of course we have the almost-organic Coffee Alamid -  civet coffee produced by Bote Central which is exported to Japan, US and Europe.

Why go organic? Let’s start with the health benefits - Organic produce contains up to 40 percent more nutrients and you don’t ingest any harmful chemicals because they’re pesticide-free. And of course you also have the added benefits of supporting local farmers and helping the environment.

But perhaps the most important reason why we should go for Philippine organic coffee is because it tastes good! So drop that imported coffee and get with the Philippine brew that’s healthy and pesticide-free!

Life is Fun: World Press Freedom Day

Today is World Press Freedom Day. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ‘everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.’ Let’s cherish our right to express ourselves freely and enjoy the story below:

A shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering up his courage, he finally goes over to her and asks tentatively. “Would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?”

To which she responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t sleep with you tonight!”

Everyone in the bar is now staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologizes. She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a journalist and I’ve got an assignment to study how people respond to embarrassing situations.”

To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean $200?”

The Power of the Word

Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” - John 14:12-14
