Newsmaker: SWS Survey - How Many Filipino Families Are Poor and Hungry?
Take the quick survey below and see how your family compares with other families/households in the Philippines:
1. Question on poverty: Where (or How) would you place (consider) your family?
- Not poor
- On the line
- Poor
2. Question on hunger: In the last 3 months, did it happen even once that your family experienced hunger and not have anything to eat (because of poverty)?
- Yes
- No
3. IF YES: Did it happen ONLY ONCE, A FEW TIMES, OFTEN, or ALWAYS?
- MODERATE HUNGER = Only Once or A Few Times
- SEVERE HUNGER = Often or Always
The questions above were the ones used in the First Quarter 2008 Social Weather Survey (SWS) conducted on March 28-31, 2008. SWS had face-to-face interviews with 1,200 statistically representative household heads (300 each in Metro Manila, Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao), from 240 geographical spots selected from all regions. Life is Fun: Brillante Mendoza and Raya Martin at the Cannes Film Festival

May 14th marks the opening of the 61st Cannes Film Festival. You may have heard that Brillante Mendoza’s “Serbis” is one of the 20 finalists vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or. And Raya Martin’s “Now Showing” has been chosen to be part of the festival’s “Directors’ Fortnight,” an event that showcases works of rising directors. Let’s wish them both the best of luck!Anyway, here’s a little story about an old man who hasn’t been to the cinema in a long time:
After buying his ticket, he stopped at the concession stand to purchase some popcorn.
Handing the attendant $1.50, he couldn’t help but comment, “The last time I came to the movies, popcorn was only 15 cents.”
“Well, sir,” the attendant replied with a grin, “You’re really going to enjoy yourself. We have sound now.”

There’s conflicting reports as to the number of finalists for the Palme d’Or. Some reports say there’s 20, 22, or 25 films. I checked the website of Cannes Film Fest and in their official list, there are 22 films vying for the coveted Golden Palm.

Poverty and hunger baffles me. The mendicants or beggars are lacing the pockets of their affluent or clever handlers. Regulars towing small children lament they have nothing to eat I always tell them their plaint is solved, just gather the malunggay leaves on our fence but they leave without the leaves. I know most of those on the NFA queues in my neighborhood, some are the wives of all day and all night beer and gin drinkers, jueteng and lotto players. Their boys some are snatchers and on drugs. I am surprised many of those garbage dump scroungers prefer cholesterols over leafy veggies. Other poors I see have cell phones and wear signatures and mall habitue. Break in an street criminals feign poverty to mitigate their sins. I am also poor, I walk a stretch rather than take costly rides. Must be a trademark of the Ilocano.
